Castle Residents
Castles were very VERY large in medieval times, and still are today. And also were very very crowded!! The reason of that is that the Lord was very friendly about letting people into his home….weird right. Well not that weird if you knew the reasons, he of course let them into his home for special reasons just like we do today like maids, servants, cooks, and even babysitters. But in medieval times there were ALOT more people that lived in a castle than just servants and maids. Some of those people were the Constable, the constable’s wife, a nurse, soldiers, worthy men training to become soldiers, blacksmith, groomers, a steward, a priest, and prisoners .Of course the Lord and his Lady live there…Duh. Also the lord would let entertainers come and visit every once in a while like jugglers, musicians, and jesters FUN!!!....not really right. I mean if I lived there I would have personal bubble issues.
Castle living
You would think that if you lived in a HUGE castle with lots of people ,there would be things to do. Well that was true for most of the castles residents, but for some….not so much. Most had to work…..EWW!! Basically that was all that ever went on around the castle, can I say BORING. Many people worked like craftsmen, servants, maids, blacksmith, and cooks. Even the lady had a job to do, she was in charge of everything that went on around the castle, and I mean everything. Can you imagine being in charge of a household that BIG...I can’t. While the lady was in charge of running the household the lord was busy managing his property and showing his children what they would have to look over when they grew up. But the children did other things to like handcrafts, and playing games. Other than that though I would say that the children’s lives would be down right boring. What do you think?
Interior Design
If you were looking at a castle from the outside all you would see is a large building with a couple of towers. But if you were inside a castle you would see that there is ALOT more to it than that. Some of the parts of a castle is the water gate, the chapel, the kings chamber, a storeroom, a well, a kitchen a great hall, a prison, and much much more. Overwhelming right?
Building Castles
Earliest castles were built of earthworks and timber. But as centuries went on castles were starting to be built out of stone. Unlike modern times, the medieval times had no power tools, cranes, or bulldozers to build their castles. Sounds like hard work doesn't it? Well it was, can you imagine building something as large as a castle with your hands and the limited tools you have such as a saw, a mallet, a chisel, and an ax. Usually the work to build a castle included lifting loads, digging trenches, mixing up mortar for the walls and raising the walls. Building a castle took ALOT of work, ad ALOT of time. Sometimes it would take up to 10-20 years to complete
